Bringing together tradition at ChainZ Arena — The Dragon Boat Festival
ChainZ Arena is all about embracing our community, traditions and the celebrating of culture and its events.
The Dragon Boat Festival or Duanwu Festival originating in China is one of the most traditional events of the year in the Chinese culture now being celebrated for over 2000 years!
This festival and all its splendor is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. The Dragon Boat Festival is filled with an array of color, fun, festivity, tradition and lots of delicious food. The most traditional festival food being zongzi, a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves or here at ChainZ our take on this with our “rice balls”!
Dragon Boat Racing became a symbolic and traditional event from an old legend when people paddled a boat to find the great patriotic Poet Qu Yuan who drowned in a River.
With the traditional sporting event and the races, held on this day, the Dragon boat team’s race to the sound of beating drums on the river, the winning team is said to have good luck and a happy life that year.
Other traditions on this day include drinking realgar (a traditional Chinese wine), little sown perfume pouches (sown by parents to be worn around the neck of their children) both said to drive away evil.
Also the hanging and use of Mugwort and Calamus in homes which is used to deter disease and bring good luck to families of that home.
As the Dragon Boat Festival is based on the Lunar Calendar each year the date of The Festival varies year to year. This year it is celebrated on the 25th of June 2020
The festival has been a traditional holiday and a day of worship, remembrance and of course a sporting event for a long time in China and it’s culture.
So much so whilst it originated in China it is now an activity of boat racing, fun, culture and tradition all over the world! So what better way to unite us with such an amazing event within our ChainZ Arena community too…wouldn’t you agree?
